RAW STEEL began as a team name for a small group of OC Blade skaters that were playing
in the home rink club division during the off season of travel hockey tournaments. OC
Blade teams would play in the home rink club division to hone their skills as a team and compete against their friends from
other travel hockey teams. This was an opportunity for club and travel teams
to prepare for the tournament season.
During these early years, it was against OC Blade policy for skaters to wear their tournament
jerseys when they were not actually competing in tournaments. Because of this
policy, two OC Blade coaches derived a name that was consistent with the development of their OC Blade players and at the
same time would meet OC Blade policy by not using tournament jerseys during the off season.
The name RAW STEEL was born, but the history of the name continues…
The OC Blade coaches proceeded to collaborate on the meaning of RAW STEEL. What they ended up with was a true analogy and a fitting name for an OC Blades team in training.
Consider that the OC Blades is analogous to a well forged blade, a Samurai’s sword if
you will. Before this fine weapon can be called a true sword fit for a Samurai,
raw steel must be forged and strengthened, and ultimately sharpened and polished. This
philosophy was applied to the OC Blades in training. They are much like the raw
steel of the Samurai’s sword. They are forged and strengthened, sharpened
and polished, and ultimately compete as OC Blades.
They are the Samurai’s sword.
